At the Grand Canyon:
It would be great to have in-park lodging, but apparently they are booked out months in advance. Still, I could keep checking the website for cancellations: Xanterra (https://www.grandcanyonlodges.com) Holiday Inn Express $167 (Grand Canyon Village,, South Rim), includes breakfast buffet.
If stay in Flagstaff, drive the 1 1/2 hours up in the morning to the main G.C. village. (Friend of a friend was happy at the Hilton Garden Inn in Flagstaff but could be booked out for the rest of the summer!)
Take the blue shuttle to the red shuttle (trip along the rim takes about 3 hours); skip the line at the red shuttle and walk the first mile to the first stop.
Rim trail is 7 miles
Drive to Desert view--view over the desert for hundreds of miles
Green loop desert-15 miles
Paul at the hotel said to go by car to the Watchtower and museum.
He also said an easy walk would be Powell Memorial to Hopi Point.
Idea: Go to Red Rock State Park
Go to Sedona
Go to Mesa Verde
We'll stay at the Far View Lodge located in the park. $162 with breakfast.
